Homeopathic proving. Testing a homeopathic remedy, mostly a homeopathic dilution, by empiric methods. Often there is a protocol, but provings are also done by individuals or small groups. The purpose could be to gather symptoms of a remedy, the essence, a total image or all those combined. The proving is not the same as a clinical trial which is more directed at just physical symptoms, it is more sensitive. Any take of a homeopathic dose by anyone which isn't the simillimum can be considered a proving because the person experience the act of the remedy

The method was introduced by Hahnemann in the Organon §121-142.  The basics:
§121     Substances (diluted or not) give changes in a healthy condition
§122-125     Medicine must be known and pure, no other medicine must be used, a sober diet should be held
§126, 127     Provers must be reliable, must be men and women, 
§128-132     Change the dose of the provings when necessary
§133     Place yourself in different situations
§134-135     Symptoms appear in different, many persons and different times
§136     The best remedy induces a similar condition as the proving
§137     Be modest in dosing
§138-140     New symptoms are produced by the proving, symptoms must be accurately written down 
§141     The best proving is the from the healthy physician on himself  (start point of this site)
§142     To discover symptoms from an underlying disease to be cured with a single remedy is the work of a master
