The inducement for a sequential from this topic of medical quackery is a report on MSNBC today (Jan 3, 2007) that HRT (hormone replacement therapy: Estrogen and Progestin) is responsible for millions of cases of breast cancer and many deaths accordingly. The article reports that in history this (medical quackery) therapy was recommended for women to be feminine forever, to come through menopause without the usual problems. Of course the pharmaceutical industry benefited extraordinary from these recommendations.
I wanted to do a little research for myself on HRT. Other serious side effects are heart attack, stroke, and blood clots in the lungs and legs, minor side effects are not mentioned here. The therapy is still widely used only now one is aware of these side effects and precaution is used. On commercial level remedies with progesterone (another hormone replacement ) are being sold as alternative for the ones based on estrogen.
Herbal products such as soy and red clover, are called phytoestrogens. DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a natural substance in the body that changes to testosterone and estrogen and is used in some (semi) natural medicine.
So is it recommendable to use herbs with natural hormones (or hormone simulations) instead ? No. I'm not against herbs, but healing a condition is not replacing a natural substance but making it producing it Self. Replacing natural substances causes the natural functions which are already "disordered" even less able to do their 'jobs'. This is a fundamental principle of homeopathy. Hormone Replacement Therapy is not the only medical therapy replacing substances in the body, almost all therapies are based on this 'principle', medical quackery still rules, of course not because finally the abuse of hormones is admitted, but because fundamental principles are still not met.
